Inaugural Presidential Citation of Excellence
The 2023 Inaugural Presidential Citation of Excellence was awarded to Dr. Estela Bensimon in recognition of her exemplary contributions to community college research, leadership, and practice. Borrowing from the term that she coined, Council for the Study of Community College’s 2023 conference theme was“Advancing Emotional Well-Being through Equity-Mindedness.” CSCC was honored to recognize
Dr. Bensimon for her exceptional achievements and contributions to advancing equity in community colleges. Collectively, her leadership to the Center for Urban Education, equity scorecard initiative and tools, and critical research centered on racial equity and organizational learning have had significant and long-lasting impacts on community college scholars and practitioners across the country.
2023 Recipient of the Teachers College Alumni Award
Teachers College honored Higher and Postsecondary Education EdD alum Estela M. Bensimon with the Distinguished Alumni Award on October 14, 2023.
Teachers College honored six alumni for their critical contributions to the social good, and to their fields and communities, during the College’s first TC (Re)Unites, a reunion for alumni, students, faculty, staff, friends and neighbors.
2023 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings
The 2023 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings, rank university-based scholars in the United States who did the most within the year to shape educational practice and policy.
Dr. Estela Bensimon ranked 37th, out of 200 scholars.
Simply making this list of 200 scholars is noteworthy, given the 20,000 or more who might qualify. The list includes the top finishers from 2022, augmented by nominees chosen by a 28-member Selection Committee.
2023 ASHE Presidential Medal to the Center for Urban Education
The ASHE Presidential Medal is presented to an individual of the current president’s choice at the ASHE Annual Conference awards ceremony each year.

Campaign for College Opportunity
The Campaign for College Opportunity kicked off their 20th year with their first-ever summit, celebrating the Campaign’s advocacy, coalition building and voice in creating greater college opportunity for underrepresented, minoritized students. At their Awards and Reception, they offered an opportunity for guests to network with other professionals and advocates as they recognized trailblazers that are championing college access and success with an equity-first mindset.
2022 Stan Jones Legacy Award,
Complete College America
The Stan Jones Legacy Award recognizes an individual, organization or state that has consistently embodied the vision of Complete College America and worked toward achieving the goals of increasing the number of students who earn credentials of value.
The award was established in 2016 to honor CCA’s founder and first president. Dr. Bensimon is the fifth recipient of this honor.
2020 Harold McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education

The 2020 McGraw Prize in Education winners Estela Bensimon, Michelene Chi, and Joseph Krajcik were honored on October 21, 2020 in a virtual celebration to applaud their exceptional contributions to the field of education. Joining to congratulate the winners and remark on the legacy and impact of the Prize over the years were: Amy Gutmann, President of the University of Pennsylvania; Pam Grossman, Dean of the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education; Michael Golden, Executive Director of Catalyst at Penn GSE; and the McGraw family.

2017 Social Justice in Education Award:
American Educational Research Association
The Social Justice in Education Award honors an individual who has advanced social justice through education research and exemplified the goal of linking education research to social justice. The winner of the award is invited to give the Social Justice Lecture at the following AERA Annual Meeting.
